Context:
Reclining Female Nude depicts a woman stretched out on a sofa in a corner of Kirchner's studio in Davos, Switzerland. Kirchner was sent to Davos in 1917 to recuperate from a mental breakdown brought on by the First World War. The studio became a site of renewed creativity for Kirchner just as it was during his earlier days as an Expressionist in Dresden and Berlin. In this drawing, Kirchner focuses on the angularity of the woman's body and the rich design of the sofa, which seems to parallel her stiff pose. The bright colors and geometric patterns could well relate to the compositions Kirchner made for his friend Lise Gujer, who made tapestries after the artist's paintings between 1924 and 1926.
