Context:

The long beaklike noses and elaborately decorated coiffures on the anthropomorphic handles of this large slit drum illustrate the unique artistic style of the Sepik River area and indicate a clan affiliation. The garamut is one of the most important musical instruments in the Sepik River region. It is used in communal ceremonies and dances, and as a mode of communication. Drummers have created a special language of rhythms and notes to call together meetings and to issue warnings.
