Context:

This is an example of a standard table intended for practical use. Tables utilizing identical construction techniques exist in many sizes and appear in numerous paintings and illustrated books from the Sung dynasty onward. Generally termed a "recessed leg table," its bridle-and-tenon joints, straight aprons, plain spandrels and simple stretchers combine in one of the basic and classic forms of Chinese furniture.
