Provenance:
Comte de Pimodan, Paris. Madame Dainhaut. Wildenstein, New York, 1934. John L. Severance, Cleveland.
Context:
Nattier's portraits were the epitome of the brilliant and elegant court life of Louis XV (1710-74). He excelled in the popular mode for painting women in mythological or allegorical fancy dress-transforming them into goddesses. Here he depicted the Marquise de Pompadour (great patron of the arts and a powerful political influence in France for more than 20 years) with a bow, quiver, and leopard skin, all attributes of Diana, goddess of the hunt.
