Context:
This painting was a cooperative venture; Wei Shijie painted the portrait of Hua Yan, while Hua Yan-who later became a famous painter-furnished the landscape backdrop. The portrait shows how youthful the subject appeared at the age of 23. He is depicted with a sword at his back, a reference to his early desire for a military career. He also wears a scholarly robe, which suggests an opposing aspiration. Together these are signs of a complex personality and indications of the varied identities Hua Yan would assume during his lifetime. The painting also shows Hua Yan's early talent in painting. In the landscape backdrop, he reveals a quick pace of brushwork, a liquid inktone, and a masterful handling of the peaks, ravines, and waterfall. Interestingly, these are also the very traits he would abandon in his mature years.
