Context:
The French Revolution affected the lives of both the painter and the sitter of this portrait. Girodet, who had been destined to greatness as a history painter for the French king, found no grand commissions after the abolition of the monarchy and turned his skills to portraiture. Louis-Charles Balzac, trained as an architect, found work drawing the monuments of Egypt for Napoleon rather than building any himself.
