Subject Description:
Ichikawa Monnosuke II stands leaning forward, probably toward a figure on the next sheet of the diptych or triptych, his right arm held straight out from the shoulder and the hand brandishing a branch of autumn maple. His other hand grips the hilt of hissword. The background, patterned with bands of horizontal blue lines, is probably a curtain drawn across the stage between scenes. The colors of Monnosuke II's costume are brilliant and unfaded. His over-kimono is decorated with notched circles (representing snow) and dwarf bamboo leaves over a background of vertical stripes, and the actor has shrugged off the top of that robe to reveal a white kimono underneath, patterned with fern fronds and 'Genji emblems' (Genji ko).The Genji emblem on his robes suggests that Monnosuke II is enacting a member of the Genji clan in a historical play, possibly Otokoyama Furisode Genji (Genji in Long Sleeves at Mt. Otoko), performed at the Kiri Theater in the eleventh month of 1785. ('The Actor's Image', 1994)
