Context:
Japanese potters became an important source of porcelain decorated in the Chinese manner for the European market in the early decades of the 17th century. By the 1660's and 70's, however, Japanese shapes and design schemes became popular among both the foreign and domestic buyers. Tea masters prized elegant plates such as these for use in kaiseki, cuisine served in conjunction with the tea ceremony.
