Pub Note:
Maps say "Engraved for Woodbridge's Rudiments of Geography." Earliest Woodbridge atlas we have seen. The World in Hemispheres map does not show Palmer's land off South America. The title says "Larger Atlas" while the maps mention "Rudiments" so the use of this book is transitional - it has the same group of maps as Rudiments of Geography, which was published first in 1821. The advertisement in the back of the book clarifies things: "The following atlas was originally prepared to accompany the 'Rudiments of Geography'...The whole have been revised, and some additions made, to adapt them to a work on the same general plan with the "Rudiments," which is now preparing for the higher classes of schools." Thus this book is the first edition of Woodbridge's Modern Atlas, which did not come out in final form until late 1824 (that is when the text is copyrighted)-and this book may have served as Woodbridge's more "advanced" atlas until late 1824 when the Modern Atlas was first issued. Maps are hand painted with outline color or are without color. Covers are marbled paper covered cardboard 25x16 with a paper label printed with the above title in black.
