First English edition illustrated coasting pilot guide, based on Bougard's "Le petit flambeau de la mer", first published in 1684, and was translated by John Thomas Serres, Marine Painter to the King, who added his magnificent views of headlands, ports, lighthouses, landmarks, topography, coastal scenes, ships, rowing boats and harbor entrances. 144 pages of text, 137 hand-colored aquatint plates of land profiles by J. Stadler after J.T. Serres on 20 sheets, 24 hand colored engraved maps on 12 sheets by John Luffman, dedication,list of subscribers, table of soundings and index. Bound in half leather hard cover blue paper with title "The little torch 1801" in gilt on spine. "Appearances" from drawings by J.T. Serres, engraved by J. Stadler: p. 131-134, 20 plates.
