Pub Note:
Presentation of 14 highly detailed double-page hand colored maps, showing Paris during the period after the Revolution and before the reforms introduced by Baron Hausmann under Napoleon, a time when the city was divided in 12 arrondissements and its limits were defined by a quasioctagonal wall. The maps show Paris's parochial divisions, flood plains (based on the 1802 flood), hospitals, markets, waterways and sewers, and firehouses and other features. The maps are all printed from the same plate, with the upper right oval title and label pasted on new for each sheet, as well as the coloring by hand on the map itself to show the various information. This is considered the first thematic atlas made of a major city. The 14 sheets are similar to thematic layers in modern GIS maps of cities and regions.
