Pub Note:
This edition by Quasar is a reprint of Rudolfo Lanciani's 1901 edition of Forma Urbis Romae, reduced by half. The sheets of the 1901 edition were 57 x 87 cm at a scale of 1:1,000. Included in this Quasar edition is an introduction by Filippo Coarelli giving background and context to Lanciani's work. Lanciani's map shows the built history of Rome from ancient times to the end of the 19th century. Using black, red, and blue colors, the map defines the different historical layers of the city's past - black for the ancient monuments, red for the early modern city and blue for the city at the time Lanciani published the map. Lanciani relied on thousands of photographs, drawings, and other documents, many of which are now online at https://exhibits.st… Lanciani also used Nolli's 1748 map of Rome as source for his red colored layer - see our copy https://www.davidru… Although a hundred years old, Lanciani's map remains an important source of information on Rome's past and is a landmark in the evolution of historical mapping and data visualization.
