Note:
Color map of London underground system, Central line. Showing terminal points, stations, interchange stations, lines used and under construction. In lower left margin: 1047-2294 M-2000. Includes legend. Early postwar quad foolscap version of Beck’s innovative and influential diagram, published for display in stations across the Underground network. In 1946 Beck was instructed to reintroduce the proposed extension schemes to the Northern and Central Lines which had been disrupted by the war, adapted to the rectilinear configuration which he had introduced at the beginning of 1941. A printed paper label announcing newly opened stations on the Central Line has been pasted beneath the title. Garland notes “a significant, if unsensational, innovation” in the outlining of the parts of the District and Metropolitan Lines which constituted the Inner Circle. Ken Garland, Mr Beck’s Underground Map, p. 40.
