Pocket-sized world atlas, 2nd. edition, 1821, by William Faden. Contains 58 maps, including eleven ancient maps numbered 1-11, followed by forty seven modern ones numbered 12-58. Showing political and administrative boundaries, cities, towns, rivers, roads, canals, fortifications, etc. Relief shown by hachures and pictorially. This is a highly important copy owned by Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta, includes his manuscript log of voyages to and from India and the Far East, including Singapore, Malaya and Ceylon. Inscribed by Wilson on front endpaper “This book, my incomparable companion for 35 years, I leave to my dearest and most beloved daughter Eliza Emma. D. Calcutta January 12 1857”. Maps are copper engraved hand colored, bound in reddish brown full calf embossed binding, with title "Atlas" stamped in gilt on spine. Maps dated 1819-1821, and engraved by Thomas Conder, John Hatchett, Thomas Foot, William Palmer, D. Henwood, and Thomas Starling. The log is written mainly to the front and back endpapers, but also on several maps and content. The earlier voyages are noted at the end of the volume.
