Shows plans of fortifications and towns, including Villa de Sao Borja, Villa da Uruguayana, Curuzu, Curupaity, Tuyuty, Sauce, Villa do Pilar, Tahy, and Humaita, Lucque, and Assumpcao. Includes the portraits of the martyrs, surrounding the emperor Pedro II, decorated with garlands and warlike motifs. Bound in green paper cover boards with title on front cover. "First edition; extremely rare atlas published in Rio de Janeiro showing the region where the so-called War of the Triple Alliance (1865-1870) was fought (an armed conflict which involved Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, and which ultimately led to the destruction of Paraguay and the decimation of its population). This atlas is one of the earliest atlases made in Brazil, and as far as we are aware, the best cartographic rendering of the most significant armed conflict fought in South America since the wars of independence; most maps of the war are based on Jourdan’s. The work includes a double-page plate illustrating the martyrs of the war, all in oval portraits, surrounding Emperor Pedro II." Sebastian Hidalgo Sola.
