Detailed 1896 plan of Leeds in a series of twelve loose sheets of fire insurance maps in folio case. Includes an index dated 1931, the Key map and plans are dated 1896. Map 119 dated 1928. Title from Index sheet. Plans are numbered 101-119, covering the area around Leeds, as far as Sowerby Bridge and Knottingley, and contain plans of the warehouses at various depots in the district. Showing railway stations, bridges, canals, position of warehouses, building footprints, their use, the number of floors and the height of the building, as well as construction materials and special fire hazards documented in order to estimate insurance premiums. Names of individual businesses, property lines, and addresses were also often recorded. Includes compass rose. And text. In lower left: “Entered at Stationer’s Hall. Together these maps provide a rich historical snapshot of the commercial activity and urban landscape of towns and cities at the time.
