Charles Vignoles was in the United States in the 1820's making survey maps for Mills' 1825 Atlas of South Carolina (see our 2792.000) as well as an important map of Florida in 1823. Later, he returned to England and spent the rest of his career there. Map in 14 sheets: 10 maps, each 670 x 1050 mm. and 4 sections, each 640 - 660 x 995 mm. all hand colored in outline, at a scale of approximately 4 inches to the mile. All linen backed and contained in two contemporary straight grained morocco boxes, spines worn and with the flaps replaced with modern cloth. Charles Vignoles [1793 -1875] was an influential British railway engineer who worked at various times with theRennies, the Brunels and George Stephenson. He surveyed for the Midland CountiesRailway which opened in 1839. Scarce, the University of Manchester copy (this copy,) is the only one recorded.
