Large-scale Cadastral map of Washington, D.C., by Joseph Entoffer and A. Bastert with the assistance of Washington, D.C. City Surveyor P.H. Donegan. Title from sheet no. 1. 1 map in 10 double page sheets, 59 x 85 or smaller, accompanied by pastedown index map inside front cover: “Map of the cities of Washington and Georgetown, D.C.”, 44 x 43. Cadastral map showing lot lines, lot numbers, block numbers and street names. The maps show roads, landmarks, parks, public buildings. Maps are particularly focused on the fire-fighting infrastructure of the city, showing the city's fire alarm boxes and fire hydrants ("fire plugs"). Includes "Table showing the width of the streets." And list of “Avenues”. Relief shown by contours and spot heights. In 1872 the Board of Public Works introduced the first comprehensive set of building regulations in Washington which addressed health and safety matters, particularly fire safety. Before 1872, builders in Washington had been operating under guidelines first issued by President Washington in 1791, and reissued, reaffirmed, and adapted by later governments. Bound in cloth covered boards, quarter bound with gilt lettering "Map of Washington, D.C. 1872." on front cover.
